Why AI Security Must Be Integrated Into Enterprise Security Operations

“The popularity of custom-built AI agents is introducing new attack surfaces and risks that demand enterprises adopt secure development and runtime security practices. As AI agents’ actions are based on a probabilistic model, they are, by nature, less predictable, making risk management less straightforward.”

AI risk occurs not only during design but also throughout production through inputs, outputs, data flows, user behavior, and system dependencies. Attack surfaces expanded by AI include three key risk areas:

  • Input-based attacks. AI models respond dynamically to prompts, queries, and data streams. Malicious or manipulated inputs can influence outputs without exploiting a vulnerability in the underlying infrastructure. Risks such as prompt injection, data poisoning, or model manipulation often bypass network and endpoint controls, making them invisible to legacy detection approaches. 
  • New dependency chains. AI models rely on training data, fine-tuning pipelines, external APIs, orchestration layers, and downstream integrations. A failure or compromise at any point in this chain can alter behavior, making prediction or detection more difficult. Unlike traditional software defects, AI failures can present as subtle shifts in output quality, accuracy, or bias rather than clear errors.
  • AI autonomy. Organizations increasingly deploy autonomous AI systems, with AI agents and automation that make or recommend decisions. Embedding autonomous systems operating in real time into SOC environments introduces new operational and ethical considerations. AI systems require continuous operational oversight, since preventative controls alone can’t fully mitigate AI risk.

Integrating AI Risk Into SOC Operations

Security Operations Centers detect, investigate, and respond to unusual behavior across enterprise environments. If AI systems operate outside of SOC visibility, risk management becomes fragmented and reactive.

According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) AI Risk Management Framework:

AI risks should not be considered in isolation. Treating AI risks along with other critical risks, such as cybersecurity and privacy, will yield a more integrated outcome and organizational efficiencies.

Start integrating AI risk into SOC workflows by expanding what your SOC monitors. Augment traditional telemetry such as logs and alerts with AI-specific signals to monitor model inputs and outputs, track behavior changes, and identify anomalous usage patterns that could indicate misuse or manipulation.

Ensure your SOC analysts have the context needed to understand how AI systems should behave. Without baseline expectations, analysts might dismiss abnormal outputs as model quirks rather than potential security events. Unauthorized or unmanaged AI usage (“shadow AI”) can easily evade standard monitoring unless your SOC explicitly accounts for it. 

Operational integration also requires workflow alignment. Route any alerts related to AI systems through the same triage, escalation, and documentation processes as other security events to ensure consistent handling. Such consistency helps avoid creating parallel response paths that make accountability unclear.

Some organizations have started using AI-assisted tooling within the SOC itself. AI can augment analyst workflows to investigate and respond to incidents more quickly, which reinforces the need for AI-aware operational models rather than isolated controls.

Improving Incident Response for AI-Driven Failures

Traditional incident response processes focus on likely failures such as malware infections, unauthorized access, and data exfiltration. AI-driven incidents often look different.

An AI incident might involve gradually degrading model behavior, unintentionally disclosing sensitive information, or amplifying biased or harmful content. These events might not trigger conventional severity thresholds but can carry significant regulatory, reputational, or operational risk.

Without defined playbooks, teams struggle to respond consistently. You might have security teams who detect unusual activity but lack authority to intervene in application behavior. Or engineering teams who can understand the model without recognizing the security risks involved. Or legal and compliance teams who get involved only after an external impact.

To embed AI risk into your organization’s incident response plan, be sure to:

  • Expand what qualifies as a security incident.
  • Predefine roles and actions. 
  • Secure not only the model, but also the surrounding components where many AI failures emerge, such as data handling, output processing, and operational workflows. 
  • Address containment strategies specific to AI systems, such as disabling integrations, reverting models, or modifying input controls. 
  • Feed lessons learned from AI incidents back into monitoring and governance to prevent recurrence.

Building Continuous AI Security Oversight

AI security requires continuous operational oversight rather than a point-in-time assessment. Models evolve, data changes, and usage patterns shift as an organization adopts systems more broadly across the business.

Real time AI monitoring is crucial for maintaining a strong AI posture. Ongoing AI observability preserves auditability, detects anomalies, and ensures operational consistency within policy over time.

Instead of creating separate AI security teams, embed AI expertise into your organization’s established functions to ensure teams share visibility and accountability. Align AI security with existing enterprise programs such as Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC), SOC operations, and risk management. 

Governance should operate in real time across the AI product lifecycle with ongoing monitoring, policy enforcement, and periodic reassessment of risk. As AI governance and regulations evolve globally, enterprises with operationalized oversight will be better positioned to demonstrate control, transparency, and responsiveness.
